Once again I am doing clay at Wilson school this Spring! Students are working on sculptural animals/ figures and leaf pressed platters. I am having each grade do the same project this year and the emphasis is in experimentation and problem solving. To promote creative expression, I have given them tips for how to attach pieces and how to break the animal into shapes to better understand what it looks like, but aside from that and some individual help I am letting them problem solve and find their own solutions for their sculptures. Students will learn more from encountering problems and having to come up with their own solutions than if I lead them through every step of the process. I wanted to provide them with time to play and explore the medium for themselves and it seems to be paying off. Their sculptures are all very different and very creative.<br />

This spring I visited Wilson Elementary School and led various "spring themed" clay projects with every class. Each grade worked on a different clay project listed and pictured below. The students had a blast and learned some fun clay building techniques and skills.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Kindergarten: We talked about things that make up think of spring and learned how to make some bugs, butterflies and worms out of clay. Students made a platform and attached their critters to it. The clay was painted with glaze and students got to decorate a background for their "spring scenes" with oil pastels and watercolor paint.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
First Grade: Students decorated clay slabs with flowers, butterflies, trees and more to create wall hanging plaques. Once glazed and fired, students strung string and beads on the wall plaques. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It was such a joy teaching at Wilson! The projects turned out wonderfully diverse and students really put a lot of thought and skill into creating them. They were also very patient during the long wait for finished work as work was transported and fired off site at the Corvallis Arts Center. Many thanks to teachers and parent volunteers for the help loading and unloading work and help in the classrooms during the project! Have a wonderful summer everyone!</div>

Th<span style="font-family: inherit;">is month I am working with associates at <a href="http://www.cornerstoneassociates.com/about.html">Cornerstone</a> to create sculptural clay art works based on the poetry of Charles Goodrich, a local South Corvallis poet. Here is a brief description of the event at Taylor Street: "This art exhibit/ community reading presents material created during an intensive artist residency which paired a ceramicist and an artist with participants of Cornerstone Associates, Community Access Program and references poems found in Charles Goodrich's collection 'The Insects of South Corvallis'."<br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span style="background-color: white; color: #141823; line-height: 18px;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">An observation from Kaitlyn, summing up the first day… "I was struck by how silent the room became when I was reading poetry or when most individuals were focused on drawing or sculpting. I had the opportunity to also read poems to individual associates while they were working and the response was positive. I know that some participants are looking forward to our return on Friday and I see that as a big success. There were also associates who did not seem to want to participate at the beginning of class who ended up joining us at the table and making some work. That was a really great thing to see!"</span></span><br />
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1a26UdzHGZU/VO5PHuzuEUI/AAAAAAAAI7w/WSp5bxRB5Ng/s1600/10991091_898914716825299_2695902218720664136_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1a26UdzHGZU/VO5PHuzuEUI/AAAAAAAAI7w/WSp5bxRB5Ng/s1600/10991091_898914716825299_2695902218720664136_n.jpg" height="213" width="320" /></a><br />
The artwork that resulted from this project was fantastic! I also strongly feel that it's all about the process rather than product. I really felt that to be true especially for this class. Many associates seemed so happy simply creating and when they were done we took the finished piece and brought another fresh piece of clay. Clay as a medium seemed to really grab their attention whether they were working with a single piece of clay the whole class or turning out sculpture after sculpture. The versatility of the clay, the smell, the feel; it all seems to have such a therapeutic effect. Everyone who participated made at least one sculpture and many associates were very prolific in their art making. After the fourth class, and with one more to go, I have seen so much progress in terms of individuals participation and excitement about the project! Several associates who had been fairly quiet in past sessions were very enthusiastic about their artwork and excited to bring it home!<br />

During the last class we did some colorful collaging inspired by butterfly wings. Though this part of the project was almost 1 month after the initial clay portion of the project, associates remembered us and there were ear to ear smiles and lots of laughs! I feel really great about the project and I think the associates really benefited from the exposure to different art mediums and poetry. I am looking forward to the event on April 16th!<br />

This weekend I taught a drawing lesson at a "Drink and Draw" hosted by 2Towns Ciderhouse. Adults 21 and up gathered in the beautiful Barrel Room with it's gigantic Lord of the Rings door, mood lighting and relaxed feel. The theme was "Still Life" but I wanted something fun so I posed some classic action figures and dinosaurs with the fruit for an "Action Packed Still Life". Lots of folks turned up for the event, all with different levels of confidence about their drawing skills. I gave a brief overview about getting started; figuring out the composition of the drawing, blocking in objects, determining a standard of measurement and building up the drawing. Once everyone got started I bounced around the room and checked in with people offering drawing tips and motivation. It was a fun group of people and the drawings were totally fantastic! See for yourself!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This Autumn I will be having my second child and I am so grateful to have the opportunity to take a maternity leave this Fall term to focus on my own pottery and spend more time with my family before new baby comes. As busy as I am with a 2 year old, I have been making my work into habit (thank you nap time!) and been very productive getting ready for the <a href="http://corvallisfallfestival.org/about/">Fall Festival</a> as well as the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/events/845363312164872/">South Corvallis Art Walk</a>. There is a real freedom in allowing myself to simply be an artist through motherhood and I see this as such an important time in my life. My clay work has helped me maintain my individuality and identity during a time where caring for my family has been such a huge part of my life. It's easy to get lost in laundry and dishes and lose sight of the things that make you uniquely you as you transition not motherhood. I am so grateful for my home studio that is accessible and welcoming any time I feel the creative urge as well as supportive family who respects me as an artist. My hope is to build up an inventory before baby comes that will allow me to take advantage of opportunities to show/ sell my work in 2015. I am not sure when I will be entering the teaching world again, however, feel free to contact me after the new year as I am happy to consider teaching private lessons and small groups at my home studio until I am ready to offer classes again out in the community. </div>

I just completed a tile project at the Children's Farm Home that has been in the works since the beginning of 2014. The intention of the project was to create a tile mural to be displayed at the Farm Home showing both images that represent the history of the farm home as well as the farm home today. Farm home residents helped to design the layout of the project and even designed and hand drew many of the images. I gathered some old historical photographs of the farm home and printed them for us to use. The process of making the tiles was in a classroom setting. Residents were taught the basics of making tiles from scratch, hand carving them and using a process called "mishima" or slip inlay to add the black outline of the drawing. We decided to keep the mural black and white so that the details of the drawings would stand out and to keep the tiles more consistent. Project organizer Martha Shimeall and myself then arranged the tiles and adhered them to a board, grouted them in and the facilities team built a frame for the mural out of recycled wood from the floor boards from one of the farm home's old buildings. I painted the frame and added text around the frame that represents the seven commitments of a Trauma Informed Care Model that is being implemented through the agency right now.<br />

<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ZYhHzGH0ygk/U8r76drP9VI/AAAAAAAAIqU/C0y6k0LqvUE/s1600/IMG_4840.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ZYhHzGH0ygk/U8r76drP9VI/AAAAAAAAIqU/C0y6k0LqvUE/s1600/IMG_4840.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
The week of July 7-11th, 2014, students at the Corvallis Arts Center explored the wonderful world of nature through various art projects. In my class, we looked at the work of <a href="http://www.morning-earth.org/ARTISTNATURALISTS/AN_Goldsworthy.html">Andy Goldsworthy</a>, an artist working with only natural materials to create unique and fantastic art. Students created sculptures using natural objects inspired by his art. Students brought found materials from home and gathered materials on site then worked together to come up with a group sketch of what the project would look like and what materials we would need. We then chose a site on the west side of the arts center to create our installations.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-dzWIeecNDMk/U8r7-WCh4WI/AAAAAAAAIrE/84myBHIpzEU/s1600/IMG_4842.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-dzWIeecNDMk/U8r7-WCh4WI/AAAAAAAAIrE/84myBHIpzEU/s1600/IMG_4842.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: start;"> In the second part of the class, we looked at the art work of </span><a href="http://www.metmuseum.org/toah/hd/geok/hd_geok.htm" style="text-align: start;">Georgia O'Keffee</a><span style="text-align: start;">, a painter also inspired by nature. The natural art of Andy Goldsworthy is shared with the world through photographs as many of the installations are made in remote areas or are fleeting due to the materials used. Instead of taking this route I decided to have students document their project by creating paintings that captured the feeling of the sculpture. Students did still life sketches of their project using charcoal, oil pastels and chalk pastels and then took the sketches in the painting room where palettes were mixed and larger paintings evolved. The following pictures show the process of building the sculptures as well as the final paintings that result. Enjoy!</span></div>

Students had a ton of fun creating characters, props and imaginative stories and worked in teams to create short claymation films using basic stop motion animation. I edited them using iMovie and students were able to choose their own sound effects as well as do voice overs. Enjoy!<br />

In the spirit of summer sidewalk doodling I thought I'd post a project from 2011 that I did with a group of students during a summer program at the Arts Center. We gained inspiration from one of the worlds most talented sidewalk chalk artists <a href="http://www.metanamorph.com/">Edgar Mueller </a> and used basic principles of perspective to create our own 3D sidewalk landscapes. Enjoy!<br />

Firing a manual kiln, A Teacher's Guide:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XY2Dt-nsyJU/U2hV2rsz_YI/AAAAAAAAIj0/MVqbp8S7w1Q/s1600/IMG_4134.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XY2Dt-nsyJU/U2hV2rsz_YI/AAAAAAAAIj0/MVqbp8S7w1Q/s1600/IMG_4134.jpg" height="320" width="239" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Preparing the kiln: Load desired cone into kiln sitter by lifting up the metal plate above the power button….<br />
<a name='more'></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2EUp0tjNFE8/U2hV2bAft1I/AAAAAAAAIj4/52ONJSPAfEM/s1600/IMG_4135.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2EUp0tjNFE8/U2hV2bAft1I/AAAAAAAAIj4/52ONJSPAfEM/s1600/IMG_4135.jpg" height="320" width="239" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
then pressing down the small lever to hold it in place- while holding the lever….</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-TMnco-laBzc/U2hV2MKoMDI/AAAAAAAAIjw/Pu_kvJiD5VE/s1600/IMG_4136.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-TMnco-laBzc/U2hV2MKoMDI/AAAAAAAAIjw/Pu_kvJiD5VE/s1600/IMG_4136.jpg" height="320" width="239" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
…place cone into kiln sitter on the inside of kiln and you can then let go of the lever as the cone will be holding it in place (be sure that when you load the kiln that your shelves are NOT resting on the kiln sitter- give it plenty of room). If using a cone (looks like a cone) make sure you load it correctly so that it will bend in the shape of a U when it gets soft (so that it shuts the kiln off). If using a bar (looks like a rectangle) you can load it any old way and it will be fine. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-hUqV25vyEo0/U2hV3qpBHyI/AAAAAAAAIkI/1oK7we0BN00/s1600/IMG_4137.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-hUqV25vyEo0/U2hV3qpBHyI/AAAAAAAAIkI/1oK7we0BN00/s1600/IMG_4137.jpg" height="320" width="239" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Make sure the timer dial is turned all the way up (turn to the right) so that your fire will not time out. </div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Candling overnight: I like to candle overnight if I am doing a bisque fire (not necessary for a glaze fire) to make sure work is completely dried out and to avoid explosions...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-LAyxLnW8iAo/U2hYERDkBZI/AAAAAAAAIk0/11JD2956_kU/s1600/IMG_3631.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-LAyxLnW8iAo/U2hYERDkBZI/AAAAAAAAIk0/11JD2956_kU/s1600/IMG_3631.jpg" height="320" width="239" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Explosions = broken hearted kids and extreme guilt, avoid at all costs! If things do explode you can bury them and pretend you are archeologists digging up ancient ruins… but seriously make sure the work is really dry before loading into the kiln! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-uxd2z_Py02s/U2hV4CRmHWI/AAAAAAAAIkQ/u1pdS-iXUaI/s1600/IMG_4139.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-uxd2z_Py02s/U2hV4CRmHWI/AAAAAAAAIkQ/u1pdS-iXUaI/s1600/IMG_4139.jpg" height="320" width="239" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So to candle overnight I prop open the lid using a kiln post and pull out all the peeps from the holes in the front of the kiln to let air circulate and to prevent the kiln from heating too quickly, thus causing things to explode if they are not 100% dry.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-GwOpceReljg/U2hV4v-tWxI/AAAAAAAAIkg/rY94ciYhULo/s1600/IMG_4140.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-GwOpceReljg/U2hV4v-tWxI/AAAAAAAAIkg/rY94ciYhULo/s1600/IMG_4140.jpg" height="320" width="239" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Then push the on button and turn all 3 dials to low. Turn on envirovent (the fan) if your kiln has one. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-irJFjdaViyM/U2hV5EsmYRI/AAAAAAAAIkk/0E4tVddhNwc/s1600/IMG_4141.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-irJFjdaViyM/U2hV5EsmYRI/AAAAAAAAIkk/0E4tVddhNwc/s1600/IMG_4141.jpg" height="320" width="239" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">The next morning *** turn the timer back up (to the right) all the way so you don't time out*** Close lid (be sure to use a thermal glove because kiln post will be hot) and put back in the peeps (My pic only shows 2 peeps because the others broke off in the holes, so they are all in even if it doesn't look like it). Do not turn up the temp. By closing the kiln up it will build heat. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Wait 2-3 hours then turn all 3 dials to Medium. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Wait another 2 hours and turn all 3 dials to high. Let it ride. Kiln will automatically shut off one the cone bends in the kiln sitter. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Note*** I do not allow work that is over 1 inch thick into my kiln, however <span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;">if you have any pieces that are thicker than one inch or more, you might want to let the kiln be on all low (with lid closed for 4 hours per inch) and the same at all Medium. </span></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">The two stages where you blow pots up are at the temp of boiling water (212 degrees) and when the chemical water is released at 1000-13000 and clay turns into bisqueware that can't be recycled back into clay. If you allow thicker pots to be fired, you'd want to give them a little more time at these two stages.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white;">
<span style="color: #222222; font-family: inherit;">I personally wait to fire my pots until they are bone dry and then I still candle them overnight just to be sure they are 100% dry. As a teaching </span><span style="color: #222222;">artist</span><span style="color: #222222; font-family: inherit;"> I prefer safe to sorry when it comes to firing other's work. </span></div>

Tessellations: A tessellation is one or more geometric shapes that cover an area, with no spaces or gaps in between shapes. They fit together like tiles. Some of my personal favorite tessellations are works by <a href="http://www.mcescher.com/gallery/symmetry/">Mc Escher</a>. Here is a pretty cool <a href="http://www.tessellations.org/#">website</a> about tessellations and making your own tessellations. I taught a tessellation class during "Patterns" week at an Art Center summer camp during 2013 and here are a few unique tessellations my students created:<br />

<br />

Zentangles: A zentangle is basically intense doodling using patterns and often repeated motifs without planning out what you are going to do ahead of time and instead letting it unfold, almost from your subconscious, onto the paper. It is a very therapeutic and relaxing way to work, almost like a stream of consciousness using shapes and pattern. There is an official <a href="http://www.zentangle.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=7&Itemid=111">zentangle website</a> and method, but really anyone can make up their own patterns and practice on their own. In my open studio class this spring 2014, students have been working on a community zentangle where everyone is taking turns adding more and more to the artwork. Students have really enjoyed this project and I would highly recommend it as an enjoyable activity for quiet time or down time. </div>

Most stories, myths, movies and novels incorporate a narrative structure known as the Hero’s Journey. Defined by Joseph Campbell, after studying patterns in stories and myths from all over the world, it reflects a universal structure in human experiences, myth making and storytelling. The basic structure of hero mythology is the departure, initiation and return with tests and trials along the way. The stages of the journey reflect the steps of a rite of passage, which is an experience that takes a person from one stage of life to the next. </div>

This Autumn my cartooning and clay class designed their own cartoons, story lines, built characters, sets, props and made original claymation movies! We started out by learning basic techniques for drawing cartoon characters, practicing drawing different features, expressions, movements, etc. We then moved on to sculpting with clay and figuring out how to turn 2 dimensional drawings into 3 dimensional forms. Students then started developing story lines and some students partnered up to form creative teams. Students built all their own props, sets, and characters. I helped photograph stills of their projects as they moved the characters. Students picked titles, music and made voice overs and I helped edit and turned their videos into short films. Here are some of the videos (passwords located below videos)!!<br />

I wanted to post some of the fantastic self portraits that my painting class created this Autumn. Students looked in the mirror and drew sketches. Students then used watercolor paints to add color and re-traced their original sketch lines with black marker to bring out the details.<br />

<span style="text-align: center;">What a beautiful time of year! My beginning painting students enjoyed the sunny weather and did some sketching outside with chalk and oil pastels, then we came inside and mixed earth tone palettes and painted from our sketches. We talked about how to create shortcuts with brushstrokes- so instead of trying to capture all of the details of the trees we tried to capture the feeling or impression of the trees. We looked at some impressionism paintings and discussed the different artist's styles and how they used their brushstrokes. </span><br />

This month the students at College Hill High School kicked off the school year with a collaborative tile project! During orientation each student in the school got to decorate a 4"x4" tile, keeping the overall themes of "respect" and "empathy" in mind. There were about 90 tiles in total made. Students had the creative freedom to express what those themes meant to them by using stamps, hand carving and hand painting designs. Some of the tiles represented the themes more literally by using words like "respect" and quotes like "Be the change you wish to see in the world". Other tiles were more playful with sayings like "I (heart) cats" and "moop". There were also purely visual tiles made using abstract designs and images of people holding hands, footprints, and nature.<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
I worked with the students in the art class to design a layout and display for the tiles. Tiles were woven together using colorful wire and hung from wood supports to create a tile curtain of sorts- with the middle section bowing out to create a 3 dimensional space. The project will be installed in the hallway at College Hill for passer-by's to enjoy! I will post pictures of the finished installation once it has been installed.<br />

The whirlwind of summer camps at the Arts Center hit and some wonderful things were created, (most of which I did not photograph, unfortunately). We started off the summer with circus camp where students learned stilting and poi, made props and I taught a yoga class that kept students focused and taught concentration, mindfulness and balance. The yoga turned out to be invaluable for the students (and the counselors, and me) and I received lots of positive feedback! I also was able to sit in the audience (having not had students prepare anything in particular for the circus performance) and that was a real treat to see the whole production from the audience (as usually I am behind the scenes coordinating).<br />

For puppets week students created props and costumes and put on a puppet show in central park!!<br />
<br />
During "Fantasy Fiction" week, we read a little about Ents from the J.R.R Tolken book the Two Towers. Ents are the tree like creatures that look after the forests. Students made Ent sculptures with clay and decorated with paint, collected natural objects like moss and leaves, beads, etc.<br />
<br />
The only photos I have currently are from some group mural projects my classes designed and created in teams of 4.<br />
